Braces FAQ

  • What are braces and how do they work at Village Orthodontics?

Braces are small metal or ceramic brackets that are gently bonded to your teeth. A wire is then attached to these brackets, and that wire is what gradually moves your teeth over time. At Village Orthodontics, Dr. Freedman carefully positions each bracket to control the final tooth position, then uses a series of advanced wires to guide your teeth into a healthier, more attractive alignment.
  • What types of braces do you offer?

We offer high-tech metal braces and cosmetic ceramic braces. Metal braces are strong, reliable, and can be paired with colored elastics for a fun, customizable look. Cosmetic braces use tooth-colored brackets that blend with your teeth, creating a more subtle appearance for patients who want a less noticeable option.
  • Am I a candidate for braces?

Most patients with healthy teeth and gums are good candidates for braces. At Village Orthodontics, we treat children, teens, and adults with concerns like crowding, spacing or gaps, teeth that are out of alignment, teeth in the palate, overbite, overjet, open bite, and habit-related issues such as thumb or finger sucking. At your first visit, Dr. Freedman will review your bite, jaw joints, and goals to confirm if braces are right for you.
  • What ages are best for braces?

We like to see children for an initial consultation around age 7 to check growth and spot any early issues such as crossbites. Most comprehensive braces treatment happens between ages 11 and 13, when most adult teeth have erupted and we can take advantage of growth. Teens and young adults between 14 and 21 are also excellent candidates, and adults of any age can benefit from braces as long as their teeth and supporting bone are healthy.
  • How long will I need to wear braces?

Treatment time depends on the complexity of your case, the type of bite or alignment issue you have, and how consistently you follow instructions such as wearing elastics. Simple cases may take closer to a year, while more complex cases can take longer. At your consultation, Dr. Freedman will give you an estimated treatment time based on your specific situation.
  • Do braces hurt?

You may feel some soreness when braces are first placed and after certain adjustments, especially during the first few days as your teeth begin to move. Dr. Freedman uses modern brackets and wires that are designed to reduce unnecessary pressure and help keep discomfort to a minimum. If needed, you can take acetaminophen (Tylenol) or the pain reliever you normally use for headaches. We do not recommend frequent use of medications like ibuprofen or naproxen because they can slow tooth movement.
  • What if I am allergic to nickel?

Our starting wires include nickel-titanium, which is why it is very important to tell us if you have a known nickel allergy. If you are allergic, we will note this in your chart and use alternative materials that are safer for you. Your comfort and safety are always top priorities at Village Orthodontics.
  • How much do braces cost and what are my payment options?

The cost of braces varies based on the complexity of movement and the length of treatment. After your consultation, our financial coordinator will review all fees with you, answer questions about insurance and payments, and create a plan that fits your budget. We offer no interest in-office financing, accept most major PPO dental insurance plans, and provide discounts for patients who choose to pay in full. We also accept major credit cards and CareCredit to keep treatment convenient and affordable.
  • What can I expect at my braces appointments?

At each visit, Dr. Freedman and our clinical team will check the movement of your teeth, assess the health of your gums, and determine if it is time to change wires or make other adjustments. These visits are also a chance to review your brushing and flossing, answer questions, and make sure your braces are as comfortable as possible. Regular appointments help keep your treatment on track and moving efficiently toward your final result.
  • Can adults get braces at Village Orthodontics?

Absolutely. Many of our patients are adults who want to improve their smile, correct long-standing bite issues, or prepare for restorative work with their dentist. For adult patients, we often coordinate care with your general dentist to plan any needed dental work around your orthodontic treatment. Whether you choose metal braces, ceramic braces, or later decide to explore aligners, we can build a plan that respects your schedule, lifestyle, and long-term oral health.
